You can also watch wild game on the plains down below by standing on the Poacher’s Lookout.

Tsavo West is also famous for the mane-less man-eater lions of Tsavo who killed about 130 workers of the Nairobi-Mombasa railway in the early 1900’s.

Due to volcanic activity, Tsavo West has spectacular geological features such as the 50km Shetani Lava Flow, ash cones, Shetani Cave and Tembo Peak.

Tsavo West National Park

Tsavo West is home to red elephants, rhinos, Masai giraffes, bush babies, kudus, hippos, leopards, cheetahs, buffalos, lions and numerous bird species such as the endangered Basra reed warbler.

Unlike its flat Tsavo East counterpart which has the Yatta Plateau and Galana River, Tsavo West is hilly and swampy and Lake Jipe, as well as Mzima Springs, can be found therein.

Boating is common on Lake Jipe as well as bird watching. You can watch hippos pods and fish underwater at an underground hide in Mzima Springs as the water is very clear.
